G-Mae, My Love
My grandmother is in her 90s, and during the pandemic I realized I didn’t have photographs of my own of her. Images made by me, through my eyes. Every time I go home, I make a point to visit her, but in 2020 I decided to turn one of those visits into something more intentional. We planned a small shoot, just the two of us, in the middle of a world that felt uncertain and fragile.
We kept our distance the whole time, careful and cautious, but I focused on capturing not just her face, her hands, her presence; but her space too. Her home is filled with family photos, keepsakes, and quiet evidence of a long life lived in love and memory. At the end of the shoot, she pulled me in for a hug anyway, told me how much she loves me, and in that moment the project became more than documentation.
This series is my way of holding on to her. An archive of tenderness, time, and legacy. It’s one of the most special projects I’ve ever made.
